שבהן שהו, כמו גם בפעילות תנועת הנוער הציוני והזרוע הצבאית שלה, \"הצבא היהודי\". מקצתם גם לחמו בשורות הרזיסטנס. חברי התנועה המעטים שהצליחו לברוח לשוויץ נעצרו שם במחנות עבודה מיוחדים, והמחקר שופך אור על פרק עלום זה. בוגרי התנועה ששרדו את הכיבוש הנאצי ואת שנות המלחמה עסקו בשיקום מוסדותיה של השומר הצעיר לאחר השחרור. הם הפעילו שני בתי ילדים שהיו משכן בטוח ליתומי מלחמה מפולין, הונגריה ובולגריה, שבהמשך הצטרפו אליהם צעירים מצפון אפריקה. למעשה הייתה השומר הצעיר בצרפת דוגמה לשילוב בין אשכנזים לספרדים. חברי התנועה היו שותפים גם בעזרה לנוסעי אוניית מעפילים אקסודוס והתגייסו להקמת מדינה יהודית ריבונית, וגם לאחר ייסודה הם הוסיפו לפעול למענה. בזמן מלחמת ששת הימים הפכה השומר הצעיר בצרפת לגורם משפיע בזירה הציבורית והיא גייסה אינטלקטואלים בעלי שם לתמיכה במאבק למען מדינת ישראל. בשנות השבעים יזמו חבריה הפגנות
