Everyday Anti-Semitism in Prewar Nazi Germany: The Popular Bases

The author presents examples of antisemitic incidents during the Weimar Republic and in the 1930s. Antisemitism at the grassroots level existed in Germany from the Middle Ages onward; it was not an invention of the Nazi regime. Anti-Jewish actions during the years 1933–1938 — restrictive legislation and discriminatory measures — often arose on popular demand, and the many acts of violence perpetrated by the SA had popular support.
