What does this Story Mean to Me? The Story of the St. Louis

This teaching unit focuses on the tragic fate of the Jewish refugees of the St Louis, a ship that was supposed to bring more than 900 German Jews from NS Germany to the US. The Story of the St. Louis depicts a variety of central events from the time of the Holocaust and World War II.

The material is based on three biographies, showing young people in conflict and decision-making situations, describing dilemmas, and illustrating transnational life paths. Through this study material, students will learn how to approach complex issues, relate macro-history to micro-histories, and acquire narrative competence. The material also encourages an informed reflection about the connection between past and presence.
