The Netherlands and Auschwitz

In mid-1942 Dutch Jews were rounded up in the Westerbork camp, and subsequent deportation to Auschwitz commenced. Most of the Jews were immediately sent for gassing and cremation. This continued until September 1943 by which time some 60,000 had been deported and only a few still remained at Westerbork. The Jewish Council and the Dutch authorities refused to believe that such atrocities were indeed being perpetrated, despite BBC radio reports and those from other sources including eyewitnesses. Hence, in general, they cooperated with the Germans.
