Czech Holocaust or Holocaust in the Czech Lands?: Livia Rothkirchen, The Jews of Bohemia and Moravia: Facing the Holocaust

Rothkirchen’s book examines the Holocaust as it unfolded in Bohemia and Moravia, defining its subject primarily in territorial terms. As such, this work encompasses not only the “Jews of Bohemia and Moravia,” but also Jews from Germany, Holland, Denmark, etc., who found themselves in Czecho-Slovakia (and then the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) as refugees, internees or deportees between 1938 and 1945. The first synthetic work in English on this topic, this book also sheds important light on Jewish participation in the Czech resistance, the Czech Government-in-Exile, and the Czechoslovak army on French soil. Particular attention is paid to forms of “spiritual resistance” in Theresienstadt/Terezín and elsewhere in the Protectorate.
