Jean Ancel — Iaşi 1940—Jerusalem 2008

Jean Ancel was the most important scholar on the Holocaust of Romanian Jewry. His books and articles are regarded as monumental achievements in the historiography of the Holocaust in Romania and will certainly remain so in the future. Ancel was born and educated in Iaşi, and received his higher degrees, through PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem following his immigration to Israel. His research took him to archives in Romania, Ukraine, Russia, and the US, and his publications made a major contribution to raising awareness to the Shoah in Romania and Transnistria (in Western Ukraine), which was under Romanian occupation. He helped lay the groundwork for future research on the subject.
