Of Integrity, Rescue, and Splinter Groups Efraim Zuroff, The Response of Orthodox Jewry in the United States to the Holocaust: The Activities of the Vaad ha-Hatzala Rescue Committee, 1939-1945

In this review essay the reviewer suggests that the author has not resolved the inherent tensions between his desire to praise the rabbis for their initiative and motivation, on the one hand, and his desire to adhere to canons of empirical research, on the other. The argument in favor of motives appears at times to overwhelm the good sense that the author has used in demonstrating the fairly meager practical effects of this organization.
