To the Righteous among the Nations in Yad Vashem Studies, Volume XIX

Mordecai Paldiel

“To the Righteous among the Nations Who Risked Their Lives to Rescue Jews”

Paldiel’s contribution defines the criteria established by the Israeli Holocaust memorial institution — Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority — to determine who is entitled to receive the distinction “Righteous among the Nations” given to those Gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews in the Holocaust. Examples are given of borderline cases and the considerations involved in reaching a decision, such as cases of people who protested against anti-Jewish measures while not personally saving Jews.
