Women’s Experiences During the Holocaust – New Books in Print Dalia Ofer and Lenore Weitzman, eds., Women in the Holocaust, Judith Tydor Baumel, Double Jeopardy: Gender and the Holocaust

This review essay focuses on Women in the Holocaust edited by Dalia Ofer and Lenore J. Weitzman and Double Jeopardy: Gender and the Holocaust by Judith Tydor Baumel. Although diaries and memoirs have been published for more than fifty years, it was only in 1998-99 that we could begin to point to a core of scholarly books that address issues relating to women in the Holocaust. The breadth and depth of Ofer and Weitzman’s Women in the Holocaust make it an invaluable tool for those seeking to integrate the study of women and gender during the Holocaust into their teaching of the Holocaust. Baumel’s Double Jeopardy enriches our understanding of gender and the Holocaust, but better editing would have enhanced the book even more. Several other recent scholarly books on women in the Holocaust are also addressed briefly in this review essay.
